Antique British 1845 pattern British Field Officers Sword. Used between 1860-1895. For sale
This is an 1845 pattern Field Officers Sword with Wilkinson Blade and Solid guard.
This sword replaced the 1822 Pattern sword. The folding guard was replaced with a solid version that provided more protection. The blade was changed to the new Wilkinson blade.
This sword was issued to Field Officers. Officers of Major and Lt. Colonel rank as denoted by the Brass scabbard. Lower rank Officers had plain steel scabbards.
As this sword was sold to an Officer sometime between 1860 and 1892. That it has a solid guard, a half thumb grip (both these started appearing late 1850s) and that it was replaced in 1892 leads me to this conclusion.
Condition:
The Sword is solid. The blade is clean but with a faint mottling that comes with age.
The Shagreen Grip has turned slightly green with age as Verdigris from the brass has leeched through. I have left this as it adds to the provenance.
The Scabbard is brass plated and is complete with hoops. There are only a couple of minor dents.
History:
This is a very good example of a senior Infantry Officers sword that is now over 130 years old. Carried by British Officers during the time of conflicts from North Africa to New Zealand.
