This is an 1822 pattern Field Officers Sword with folding guard and Pipeback blade.

This sword replaced the 1803 Pattern sword. The guard was upgraded to provide more protection to the fingers. The blade was changed to the new pipeback blade.

This sword was issued to Field Officers. Officers of Major and Lt. Colonel rank as denoted by the Brass scabbard. Lower rank Officers had plain steel scabbards.

As this sword is and 1822 pattern and that it carries the VR cartouche. It can be determined that it was sold to an Officer sometime between 1837-1845.

Condition:

The sword is solid. The blade almost spotless. The grip intact and firm.

The Scabbard is quite battered with numerous dents and a slight kink halfway down. Happily the blade still draws smoothly.

This is a good example of a sword that is rapidly approaching its 200th year.

History:

Swords of this type saw action in Burma, India, China and Canada to name a few.
