The British 1897 Pattern Piquet Infantry Sword is a lighter version of the standard 1897 pattern sword, primarily designed for ceremonial or dress occasions. It retains many of the aesthetic features of its combat-ready counterpart but is optimized for non-combat use.

Key Features:

Blade

  • Type: It has a Fox type blade with a central fuller running along much of its length. The tip narrows to a point.
  • Length: 32.5 inches (82.5cm).
  • Thickness: Thinner than a standard blade it is still very sturdy and more than capable in the thrust.
  • Design: There are faint etchings to parts of the blade but most have dissapeared to time. There is a sprinkling of patination along much of the blade.
  • Function: Mostly ceremonial or symbolic; You would see it on the parade ground or at social functions. However this one could still do a job if the Officer found himself in a scrape!

Hilt

  • Guard: A half basket steel guard similar to the standard 1897 pattern. The guard is decorated with pierced scrollwork and carries the George V royal cypher. appearances.
  • Grip:
    • Covered with sharkskin (ray skin) for a refined finish.
    • Bound with steel wire for grip and aesthetic appeal.
  • Backstrap: Checkered pattern for grip.

Scabbard

  • Material: Leather with steel fittings.
  • Design: Slimmer and lighter than the combat version, complementing the overall refined design.

Weight

  • Purposeful Reduction: The piquet sword is lighter and more balanced, making it comfortable for officers to carry during parades, inspections, and formal events.

Usage

The 1897 Pattern Piquet Infantry Sword is often carried by officers at events where a full-weight combat sword would be impractical or unnecessary. These swords serve as a symbol of rank and tradition while contributing to the officer’s dress uniform.

Today, the piquet sword remains a collector's item and is still in use by some regiments for formal military ceremonies.

Please see pictures. This sword is a solid example of a WW1 era Infantry Officers Piquet sword.
