The 1897 pattern infantry sword is a classic example of British military design, used by officers in the late Victorian era and beyond. Smooth and minimalist, it is an elegant sword. Designed for thrusting rather than cutting it has a narrow pointed tip designed for piercing.
Here are its key features:
Blade
- Type: Straight, Fox type blade. Double-edged towards the tip. A single fuller running along much of its length.
- Length: Blade length is 33 inches (84 cm).
- Design: The blade has retained its original shine. The frost etchings of George V's royal cypher and crown are superb.
Hilt
- Guard: The hilt features a steel guard in the form of a three-quarter basket. The basket is pierced with intricate scrollwork patterns, offering protection to the hand while maintaining a decorative aesthetic. It carries George V's royal cypher.
- Grip: The grip is covered with sharkskin (ray skin) and bound with wire for a secure hold. The wiring is intact although it is slightly loose in one place. See picture of grip.
- Backstrap: The backstrap features a checkered pattern for additional grip.
Scabbard
- Material: Made of leather with steel fittings. Completely intact with just minor scuffing.
Please see pictures. This sword is a beauty. A fantastic example of a ww1 Infantry Officers sword.
